What is PEX-AL-PEX pipe

time2010/08/11

PEX-AL-PEX pipe is a popular choice among professional and DIY plumbers. Pex installations require no solder or glue, and PEX-AL is available in up to 500-meter lengths. This means that it can be used for extended runs without in-line connectors. However, whether using clamps, push-fit couplings or expansion connections, special PEX-AL  tools are required.

Stainless steel press rings can be used to secure press fitting to standard PEX or Fosta PEX-AL-PEX pipe . Oxygen barrier PEX-al-PEX tubing is required when connecting PEX to manifolds, pumps or other components containing ferrous (iron-based) metal, to prevent rust. The stainless steel sleeve is slipped over the end of the PEX pipe before inserting the press fitting. The jaws of the correct size PEX press tool are placed squarely over the stainless steel sleeve and brought together to complete the connection.

Pex pipe is pushed into both sides of the push-fit connectors by hand to complete the installation. However, the ends of the pipe must first be cut squarely to make full contact with the connector seals. To accomplish this, a PEX pipe cutter is required. This tool resembles a pair of heavy-duty pruning shears. It has one blade opposite a jaw designed to hold the pipe at a 90-degree angle to the blade. The PEX pipe cutter can be used to make clean right-angle cuts through various diameters of tubing.
